JACK RICHESON'S PAINTING and PALETTE KNIVES: Is it a Palette Knife or a Painting Knife? A palette knife was designed for mixing and works best for that purpose, although many artists will use it for painting.
There are many qualities of palette knives. Jack Richeson manufactures an inexpensive plastic knife for the beginner. This comes in the traditional flat and also the offset. The offset is easier to work with as it helps to keep ones knuckles out of the paint.
Palette knives will vary in quality, spring and length. Jack Richeson offers four qualities of knives and a variety of sizes, including a new 'jumbo' size. Each responds in a different way. One of the lines is manufactured in 10 shapes from stainless steel for the acrylic painter. After extended use in water, steel knives may begin to rust. The stainless steel knives work just as well, but will not rust.
Jack Richeson also offers a complete line of large, tempered steel spatulas for large work or applying gesso. Ample time and thought should go into the selection of a palette knife to ensure getting the correct tool for the project at hand.
