It is now illegal to sell paints containing cadmium and lead in Minnesota. The legislation (Minnesota Stat. Section 325E.3892) aims to restrict the use of cadmium and lead due to its harmful effects on health, particularly in young children who might be exposed to cadmium through chalk, crayons, paints, and other art, craft and jewelry-making supplies.
Under the law, manufacturers and retailers are required to ensure that products sold in Minnesota do not exceed 75 ppm total cadmium or 90 ppm lead.
If you believe, as we do, that clearly labeled artists’ supplies intended for professional use should not be subject to “tighter restrictions on lead and cadmium content in toys, jewelry, and other consumer items that children can likely encounter in the home,” please contact your state representative.
